A friend long ago said to me: LET IT REST. And isn’t that what we want to do with a problem or a troubling circumstance? Sometimes our issues overwhelm us and we go over and over and ruminate a problem…….but scripture tells us to give it a rest. It’s ok if we say to ourselves, “I will turn this over to YOU right now LORD, because YOU know what is best for me and all the thinking in the world will not solve this problem”
Letting it rest, whatever your “it” is, is not giving in to worry. The LORD taught me something when I was diagnosed with cancer……to sleep well because I so needed it and then to turn the cancer and all the tests and surgeries over to HIM. And I did sleep well during that season of my life! HE calmed my mind and gave me rest. Then the next day, a new day, I had the strength of mind, body and heart to face whatever was before me.
MATTHEW 6: 34 “THEREFORE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW, FOR TOMORROW WILL WORRY ABOUT ITSELF. EACH DAY HAS ENOUGH TROUBLE OF ITS OWN.”
The ESV version of that says “for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” So our worry today, doesn’t change tomorrow! Nothing will help that……so let it rest!
Oh how our minds labor through a thought or problem! And what does labor do? It can become exhausting. It is labor with worry attached!
David understood this kind of worry because in Psalms we often read him lamenting to GOD this:
PSALM 86: 1 “LISTEN LORD AND ANSWER ME FOR I AM POOR AND NEEDY.”
That is what is funny about problems that weigh heavy upon your heart…..you cannot buy your way out of them, drink your way out or worry your way out. The only way out is to let them rest in your FATHER’S hands. When your heart is not at rest, honestly, is there anyone who would come and take the time to find out why? Probably not……but GOD will! There is only ONE who is always there for you and HE says: “I will give you the rest you need.”
Let’s remember today the words of JESUS when HE said this:
MATTHEW 11: 29 “TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU, LEARN FROM ME, FOR I AM GENTLE AND LOWLY IN HEART AND YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOUL.”
JESUS tells us to rest IN HIM! Place your troubles at HIS feet……and rest. We all have problems and it is our nature to want them to be solved. But often, time is involved and so we need to learn to wait and in the waiting let’s rest in HIM. Only in HIS loving arms will we find the grace and strength, but most of all peace, to just……let it rest!
HEBREWS 4: 3 “FOR ONLY WE WHO BELIEVE CAN ENTER HIS REST.”
