SUNDAY REFLECTIONS

ONE VERSE CAN IMPACT US

I love how GOD can touch us in a very profound way, sometimes with just one verse.  Our time with the LORD can change.  Sometimes we do have the luxury of time, sometimes we do not.  But have you ever noticed that often there is just one verse that jumps off the page as if  GOD is speaking directly to you?  One verse can be a lifeline in our day.

PSALM 51: 10   “CREATE IN ME A PURE HEART O GOD AND RENEW A STEADFAST SPIRIT WITHIN ME.”

I remember long ago when the above verse jumped off the page at me.  For some reason I pretty much memorized it in one sitting and it has followed me and stuck with me years later.  And there are many more besides this one.

Very often in our busy days, one verse is just enough.  And many times that one verse will remind you to share it with those around you when it speaks specifically into their situation.  I’m always amazed when that happens.

In my recent study at Church we talked about memorizing scripture.  I think we sometimes over burden ourselves with thinking we need to memorize a full passage.  If you can and you do, that’s wonderful.  But if we set such a hard goal for ourselves we will never achieve it.  For me a reasonable goal is one verse.  I would rather know the verse and then live it out, rather than struggle with memorizing and losing the true meaning of the passage.

Time can be short in the mornings so don’t overwhelm yourself with saying you have to read a whole book of the Bible.  Some days are a one verse day.

PSALM 86: 11   “UNITE MY HEART TO FEAR YOUR NAME.”

I have a sign on my desk that says: you grow through what you go through.  And our growth is a daily walk with GOD in all situations and holding fast to even one verse that sustains us.

ONE VERSE  AT A TIME, CHANGES US, GROWS US AND DEEPENS OUR FAITH

PSALM 119: 18  “OPEN MY EYES THAT I MAY BEHOLD WONDEROUS THINGS OUT OF YOUR LAW.”

GOD’S word, the mystery, the wonder and the breadth and depth of it should amaze us every day.  BEHOLD HIS WORD!

MATTHEW 7: 24  “EVERYONE THEN WHO HEARS THESE WORDS OF MINE AND DOES THEM WILL BE LIKE A WISE MAN WHO BUILDT HIS HOUSE ON THE ROCK.”

Let’s be wise and let’s commit to knowing HIS word, even if it is one verse at a time.  HIS word is a light for us, a flame to draw us near.

PSALM 119: 130   “THE UNFOLDING OF YOUR WORDS GIVES LIGHT; IT IMPARTS UNDERSTANDING TO THE SIMPLE.”

GOD’S word is that bridge between us and HIS SON, a lifeline of grace to give us hope for the future.  Let one verse today touch your heart and soul deeply.  Because HE word is truth!

PSALM 119: 33  “TEACH ME , O LORD, THE WAY OF YOUR STATUTES.”

  1. I have also learnt that some days are one verse sort of days and that is ok. Regarding memorising scripture, I too have found that dwelling on one or two verses helps me remember them better than looking at whole passages.
I love the saying you have on your desk- you grow through what you go through- so very true.

    1. Yes, a friend from Church gave it to me. It’s such a good reminder. Draw near today to the word and embrace it with whole heart! “Create in me a pure HEART O GOD, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

  2. I like this idea. Whole passages (and especially their references) are overwhelming for me.

Most times, as I’m reading, those verses that jump out stay in my mind pretty well; or, I can remember some and use my online Bible to look up the rest. I don’t want to get lazy. And, I want to be able to memorize the reference!

    1. Knowing and remembering where the passages are can be a challenge too. I do have an app for that but I first try to look them up. I am thrilled when I do get it right. It’s funny how when I do remember a scripture of one verse that it stays in my mind so well. But I know that is the Spirit working in me! May GOD’S word touch your heart today my friend!

  3. What a beautiful message. I totally agree, it’s amazing how just one verse can resonate so deeply and provide guidance in our lives. Psalm 51:10 is a powerful reminder of the importance of a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. I love how you emphasize that we don’t have to memorize entire passages to experience God’s Word; even a single verse can have a profound impact.

God Bless You today and always .
