I recently read in John MacArthur’s devotional: “Drawing Near” that true believers receive GOD’S word. Which makes me ponder what is my own attitude towards HIS word? Is it everything to me, my very life and my treasure? Because some people think the Bible is just a bunch of old outdated wisdom that doesn’t apply to them. And yet there are other people who live for HIS word, who read it to nourish their souls and comfort their hearts. HIS word is holy and pure, it brings peace and comforts with GOD’S promises.
HE WHO IS OF GOD, HEARS THE WORDS OF GOD.
I don’t know about you, but when I write HIS word on the tablet of my heart, it goes with me wherever I go and I don’t forget it, long after I have it memorized, years even.
PROVERBS 7: 2-3 “KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS AND LIVE; GUARD MY TEACHINGS AS THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE. TIE THEM TO YOUR FINGERS; WRITE THEM ON THE TABLET OF YOUR HEART.”
He who is of GOD, hears HIS word and then lives it out, every single day of their life. The word is the only truth for you, it makes sense when the world does not. It is your comfort and your conviction, your all and all.
Aren’t you so very thankful for HIS word and that HE opened your eyes to read it and understand it and then to put it into practice? Every morning are you excited to see what GOD has to say to you in HIS word? I know I am! I am amazed at the depth of wisdom that exists there. The more you read HIS word, the more you are inclined to study it too.
Is your Bible handy right now or is it collecting dust on a shelf? Maybe like me, you have more than one, because each study Bible has something different to offer. I am so fascinated by all the different translations and how a change in one word or two changes my understanding sometimes. We have Bible apps that can give you any translation you want and then explains the meaning behind almost any sentence. GOD’S word is so easy to access right now that we have no excuse to not be in it. Bibles can even be found on something like Thriftbooks if you don’t mind that someone else wrote or made notes in it before you and they don’t cost that much. I have even found Bibles in Goodwill. And you can get a Bible too from your local Church. My point is that they can be found easily and I pray now that if you don’t have one, get your hands on one and see how HIS word will change your life and cause you to live it out abundantly!
If you want to understand how the Psalmist viewed GOD’S word and then see where you are in your attitude towards it, just read through PSALM 119, one of the longest psalms in the Bible, but one of the most reverent towards HIS word…….
PSALM 119: 12 “BLESSED ARE YOU, O LORD; TEACH ME YOUR STATUTES.”
PSALM 119: 16 “I WILL DELIGHT IN YOUR STATUTES; I WILL NOT FORGET YOUR WORD.”
Sounds to me like the word is treasured above all else. This is and should be our attitude towards HIS word……..
PSALM 119: 24 “YOUR TESTIMONIES ARE INDEED MY DELIGHT; THEY ARE MY COUNSELORS.”
Delight is mentioned more than once in Psalm 119 and that HIS word is a wonder to be treasured! Do you love HIS word today? Are you convicted by HIS word or are you offended? The power of the word does this, convicts or offends. But one thing is certain, HIS word is eternal and it never returns void. And it is powerful enough to change hearts and restore souls.
Today, with it being Sunday, spend some time in the GOOD BOOK. I promise you, it will never be wasted time. Because HIS word was written and left for us, so we would come to understand GOD’S heart and to know that we are dearly loved.
PSALM 119: 77 “MAY YOUR COMPASSION COME TO ME, THAT I MAY LIVE, FOR YOUR LAW IS MY DELIGHT.”
