UNLEARN SOMETHING

What does unlearning mean?

In GOD’S economy I think we learn much from HIM, but we also unlearn too.  In “My Utmost for HIS Highest” Oswald Chambers says it like this:

“THROUGH EVERY CLOUD THAT GOD BRINGS US IN OUR TRIALS WE ALWAYS THINK THAT HE IS TEACHING US SOMETHING…….BUT ACTUALLY HE WANTS US TO UNLEARN SOMETHING.”

This idea could very well be true………GOD wants to simplify us in our belief, so that we have faith like that of a child.  And simplifying our lives is a good thing, not a bad thing.

MATTHEW 18: 3   “TRULY, I SAY TO YOU, UNLESS YOU TURN AND BECOME LIKE CHILDREN, YOU WILL NEVER ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.”

What does it take to unlearn something?  It takes 21 days to make a habit or to put one into place, but I have also read this is a myth.  I guess it takes as long as it does, and we learn over time each in our own way and ability.  We learn much from the world and much of it is false.  GOD knows this about us and wants us to unlearn so we can relearn all about HIM.

But what about unlearning something?  What about a view or belief we have had our whole life?  What if GOD wants us to unlearn our prejudices and judgements we have had or made of those around us?  What if HE wants us to break through all our negative thinking and turn our thoughts only to CHRIST?  To unlearn, first we must have an open mind and be willing to turn from our thoughts and submit to GOD, who knows better.

PRAY FOR A MIND AND HEART LIKE JESUS

JEREMIAH 20: 12   “YET, LORD OF ARMIES WHO TESTS THE RIGHTEOUS, WHO SEES THE MIND AND HEART.”

GOD sees each of us quite clearly and knows in HIS infinite wisdom what we need to unlearn.  So ask HIM.  Ask HIM to root out of you what the world put into you that doesn’t belong there.

WE STAND TALL WHEN WE SUBMIT AND GO TO OUR KNEES

In full submission to HIM, let GOD show you what you need to unlearn – because within each of us, GOD is creating a pureness of our faith, faith like a child.

JAMES 4:7  “THEREFORE SUBMIT TO GOD.  RESIST THE DEVIL AND HE WILL FLEE FROM YOU.”

Our sinful nature is always hostile to GOD, so we should desire to unlearn what doesn’t belong in HIS kingdom.  Because whatever we unlearn, GOD will replace with something better, something pure.

HEBREWS 12: 9   “SINCE WE RESPECTED OUR EARTHLY FATHERS WHO DISCIPLINED US, SHOULDN’T WE SUBMIT EVEN MORE TO THE DISCIPLINE OF THE FATHER OF OUR SPIRITS, AND LIVE FOREVER?”

Discipline is hard, discipline is tough.  But GOD has made us sensitive to the small……..even when we need to unlearn something, even when we need to become like little children.  Sometimes we are aware of HIS hand and sometimes we are not, but one thing is certain, HE never leaves us or forsakes us.  GOD is doing HIS best to chip away the crud that clogs our faith!

GOD is working in us a pure faith and working out of us our thoughts, words and deeds that don’t belong………because HE wants all of our hearts, pure and simple.  There is no half-heartedness in GOD’S economy.  You are either all in or not.

Be encouraged today that to draw near to GOD and to become more like HIS SON, JESUS, we can unlearn all the world has taught us and learn the good stuff from the GOOD BOOK.  This is possible because:

ACTS 17:  28   “FOR IN HIM WE LIVE AND MOVE AND HAVE OUR BEING……..FOR WE ARE ALSO HIS OFFSPRING.”

Let’s unlearn so we can learn to become more like a simple child……..loving the LORD with all our hearts, souls and mind.

GOD IS KING…….LET’S SURRENDER

GOD IS WITH US…….TRUST HIM

GOD IS ALL POWERFUL…….PRAY HE CHANGES YOU AND HELPS YOU UNLEARN

GOD IS GENEROUS GIVING YOU BLESSINGS BEYOND ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE

HE helps us unlearn, HE redeems, HE restores and HE molds us to be more like little children, pure and simple and full of HIS love.  What is one thing you could ask the LORD to help you unlearn today?

JAMES 4: 7   “SUBMIT YOURSELVES THEREFORE TO GOD”

  1. Amen 🙏🤗

What a wonderful and thoughtful insightful Post. I appreciate the reminder that sometimes unlearning old habits or beliefs is just as important as learning new ones. It’s a great encouragement to seek simplicity and childlike faith in our walk with God. I’ll pray for His help in letting go of what doesn’t serve His purpose in my life.

    In Jesus Name, Amen

God Bless You today and always.

    You Are Loved.

  2. I love this post, Maxine!

My first thoughts were for those who grew up in abusive homes / war areas. They grow up with a lot of lies. But there are those, really, in every household who grow up with “big” or “little” lies, and we all must unlearn them to grow in wisdom and stature in the Lord.

Ask HIM to root out of you what the world put into you that doesn’t belong there.” God is the only One Who can shine His perfect light to show us the lies we believe, and the only One Who can, by the power of His Spirit, enable us to overcome by the blood of the Lamb.
